How To Clean A Mattress And Get Rid Of Stains

Your mattress should be a heavenly place where you can get all the restful sleep you need to have a successful day feeling good. We spend a good part of our lives in our beds, about seven hours per night if not more. It is important to keep out mattresses clean so that we can spend our time on them in peace.

A lot of people have trouble with their mattress when it comes time to clean it and get rid of any stains that have occurred. Mattresses are big and heavy, and are not intuitive to clean on our own. Most people just flip them over and that is all.

If you have been wondering how to clean a mattress and get rid of some stains, we have created this little guide with some helpful tips to get your mattress looking and feeling better. Mattress cleaning and getting rid of stains is something you can do on your own with some work, but if you do not feel like you are up for it, it is always a good idea to call a mattress cleaning service and get their help.

How Do Mattresses Get Dirty?

You may think that your layers of sheets and mattress toppers will stop any dirt from getting down to your mattress, but unfortunately tiny dead skin flakes, liquids and oils can still make their way down to the mattress. Every so often you should do a mattress cleaning, and if you have any bad spills you need to try to get stains up fast.

These little particles that get into a mattress can cause odors and even allergies in some people. You want your mattress to foster a restful sleep, not make you sick. Cleaning your mattress will make sure that you are getting what you need from your mattress.

Remove Bedding

The first step to clean a mattress is to get all the bedding off and into a hot washing machine. Unless there is a stain on the sheets, then you may want to wash it in cold water so that the stain will not set into the sheets.

Washing the bedding on hot is good because any dust mites that are feeding off of your dead skin will be killed by the hot water. You also want to make sure that all the bedding gets totally dry before putting it back on the bed.

Remove Odors

A simple way to remove odors from the mattress is to use baking soda. This natural cleaner that most people have around the house is great at absorbing odors, like when you put it in the refrigerator to make it smell better.

To remove the odors from your mattress, simply powder the whole surface with a small layer of baking soda. Rub the powder into the mattress a little bit, but not too much. Then you have to let the powder sit for a few hours and it will take up a lot of the odors.

After the baking powder has absorbed the odors, you only need to vacuum it up. Use a gentle cleaning head to do this, as a rotating vacuum brush could damage your mattress top if it is too rough. Then you will need to flip the mattress and powder the other side and the sides of the mattress. Then wait a few hours and then finally vacuum it all up.

Mattress Cleaner

For a homemade all natural mattress cleaner, just mix a cup of hydrogen peroxide with three tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of liquid dish soap. Put the mixture into a spray bottle, then lightly spray all over the mattress top. Try not to get the mattress too wet, as it will be very difficult to get it dry. The trickiest part is to get enough cleaner on without getting the mattress too wet.

Let the cleaner sit on the mattress for an hour or so and then vacuum it up. This mixture will kill any dust mites that are living in the mattress and will also help to eliminate stains. If you have a tougher stain you want to remove, soak it with a little bit more of the cleaner and let it sit overnight.

The next step is to flip the mattress and do the same treatment on the other side. When you are done your mattress will be looking and smelling much better, and will be ready to support you in a good night’s sleep.

Mattress Protection

If you want to protect your mattress so that it will stay cleaner longer, you can buy many mattress covers that will protect it better from dirt and liquids. Just shop at a home goods store or look online for some good deals. If you protect your mattress better, it won’t need to be cleaned as often and it will last longer.

Never Use Carpet Shampooer

Many people make the mistake of renting a carpet shampooer thinking that it is the best way to clean a mattress. This is totally wrong and can really damage or ruin your mattress. It will be too rough and use too much moisture to be effective in cleaning your mattress.

Professional Mattress Cleaners

If all of this seems like a lot of work to get your mattress clean, you are right. You may be wondering how easy it could be to hire a professional mattress cleaner. The answer is that it is very easy.

Professional mattress cleaning is the best way to get your mattress in shape and help it to last a lot longer. They will come to your home and do all the cleaning of your heavy mattress to get it back to the way it should be. You won’t have to worry about getting the mixture of the cleaner correct or over dampening the bed, they will do all the work for you.

A professional mattress cleaning service will have all the knowledge and experience to make sure that they do the job correctly and they will do a much better job than you can do on your own. Your mattress will be looking smelling and feeling so great you will think it is an almost new mattress.
