Table of Contents

After a long day at work, having a good meal and a good night’s sleep is a good way of ending a tiresome day.  We love to sleep on a clean mattress, however, if you don’t clean your mattress well you’ll never know that you’re sharing your sheets with other living organisms such as molds, bacteria, and dust mites.

We shed dead skin cells every night that can fall and sift through your mattress. These skin cells are the food of dust mites, which can breed a whole colony on your sheets. They also poop twice their body weight each day. This is disgusting, isn’t it?

They aren’t the only unwanted organisms that can live on your sheets. When you sweat at night, it can be an environment for mold to grow. Further, sweat and dead skin cells are a perfect combination for a breeding ground for bacteria. These are the unwanted things you don’t want to share your bed with.

Use Commercial or DIY Mattress Cleaners

There are three options for cleaning mattresses. Firstly, you can use chemical mattress cleaners, however, they can contain harmful chemicals that can stay in your bedding, and you can inhale them every night. This can cause various health issues such as skin allergies and irritation, and respiratory problems. They are also considered toxic and are considered environmental hazards.

Baking Soda

You can find this item in your kitchen. It’s an alkaline compound that, when mixed with water, makes a powerful cleaning agent. Using this is part of the cleaning hacks mattress you need to know. You can sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on the stained or foul area of your mattress. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, and after that, you can vacuum it.

Alternatively, you can also create a cleaning solution using baking soda, water, and white vinegar. Spray it on your soiled mattress. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then vacuum it.

White Vinegar

Dilute your white vinegar with water and place that inside a spray bottle. If there’s a pee stain on your mattress, spray it there. You can also add some baking soda to the affected area since this helps remove the foul odor and stain.

After that, you can wash your mattress and dry it up.

Hydrogen peroxide

The hydrogen peroxide you buy from the pharmacy, that’s a potential cleaner for your mattress. It can help remove the stain and nasty smell from your pet’s urine. This product is also friendly to fabrics and pets. Only use the diluted version, not the concentrated one, since that is an oxidizer and can cause flame if there’s a spark.

Hire a mattress cleaning service

The second option is to hire a mattress cleaning service to take care of the mattress. However, if you want to save money since mattress cleaning should be done regularly, your best option is the use of natural mattress cleaning hacks.

Quick and easy mattress cleaning hacks

You can find other reliable life hacks for cleaning mattresses, yet we have compiled just the three common ones. Before you go all out, you have to test it on a small area of the mattress first. Also, consider the specific cleaning standard recommended by your mattress manufacturers as well.

Use Homemade Mattress Stain Removers

You will encounter different stains on your mattress and to eliminate any type of mattress stain,  all you’ll need is your kitchen or medicine supplies.

For sweat stains

You’ll see a yellow area from a sweat stain, all you have to do is to spray it with 3% hydrogen peroxide until it’s damp. Once the peroxide dries out, the stain will also fade. You may repeat this as needed.

For Bloodstain

You’ll need 2 ounces of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon each of salt and dishwashing liquid. Spread this on the affected area and wait for 10 minutes, then spoon it off. For any residue, use a clean rag dipped in hydrogen peroxide and let the area dry. After drying, if any discoloration remains, spray it lightly with hydrogen peroxide.

For Pet Urine

You can make a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide as a pet urine stain remover. This is friendly for fabrics and easy to prepare. You can also add dishwashing liquid soap to your mixture. This helps remove the yellowish stains.

For vomit and wine spills

You will need to prepare powder detergent, cold water, and hydrogen peroxide for this. Below are the steps:

  • Create a foam solution using cold water and powder detergent
  • Apply that to the stained area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes
  • Spray diluted hydrogen peroxide on the stained portion.
  • Let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping that off with a damp cloth.
  • Let it air dry.
